Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, was the centre of the Minoan civilization, one of the first civilizations in Europe.
The term "Minoan" was coined by Arthur Evans after the mythic "king" Minos. Minos was associated in Greek myth with the labyrinth, which Evans identified with the site at Knossos.
Crete has a rich mythology mostly connected with the ancient Greek Gods. The Idaion cave at Mount Ida was the birthplace of the god Zeus and the Paximadia islands were the birthplace of the goddess Artemis and the god Apollo.
